Indian Railways, the world’s second largest rail network, is mounting a major upgrade of its line between Ghaziabad and Kanpur, and has awarded the Ansaldo Signal Consortium a USD 90 million contract to modernize the signalling and telecommunications systems along the route.
As a key part of the winning consortium, Leighton International is responsible for the provision and installation and commissioning of all GSM-R communications systems along the 500 kilometre rail link. The project involves the installation of communication equipment on towers and locomotives and the comprehensive testing of this equipment.
GSM-R is a communication platform for voice and data services for standardised train control. It provides efficient communication between the engine driver and traffic controller as well as supporting engineers and other train personnel on the line and in rail stations. Indian Railways is gradually migrating its rail communications to GSM-R with the aim of increasing safety, security and reliability of rail traffic.
